Talk:Installing Client

Why?
Why were my edits reverted? This way there's no instructions on how to use the complete installer and it looks like it's just another 1.1 installer. Also, you screwed up the ordering of the table anyways. - Nowhere
- Huh? As for the reasons: I know nothing of that installer, and we DON'T encourage downloading of non-official installers. If their is some confusion in this plz msg me directly. --Scott
- Alright, since I've been unable to contact you on AIM. Saiz added his complete installer that he made, official and all. He added it under the 1.1 Alpha Installers table and it doesn't look like it's anything different than just your average 1.1 installer, when infact it's a complete installer. I know because I've seen him talk about it before and I tried it out. It should be given it's own table and instructions added explaining how to use it correctly. I moved it so that it doesn't look like just another 1.1 installer and added those instructions.
- It's not encouraging to just have it on a different table and having some instructions. I promise I'll keep track of this page as I've already been doing and make sure no one adds an unofficial installer. It's probably my Summary that I added that made you revert the page, but I promise you, it's worse like this. - Nowhere
Unofficial (Thirdparty) Installers?
Not that I intend on making any third party installers (although, a self-extracting 7zip archive distributed via torrent wouldn't be a bad thing... imo) I think a way to discourage people from posting their own installers into Official installers, would be to have an unofficial or third party installers section, which may include unofficial, or thirdparty maps, so people can have one unified download and start playing on servers which feature custom maps (I.E. LTK and Janus Servers). --Weclock 01:15, 29 August 2006 (PDT)
- repackaging the core mod is not supported for various reasons. At release we make the packages as best as possible and continue to improve them before we get to a stable version. As far as doing map packs, that shouldn't be an issue as long as it is obvious it isn't official; non-executables(zip,rar,etc...) should be perfect in these setups and intended for servers. my 2c: As it is source engine has a fast download method, clients should have no reason to download mappacks. --Scott
- Does this mean that 2.0 is going to just be an update to 1.1 and you're going to have to go through 3 steps to play GE:S? Cause that would suck. I mean, maybe a version for people who already have 1.1 to update to 2.0 but definitely the main installer should install 2.0 without having to have 1.1 or 1.0 installed. - Nowhere
- I agree with nowhere, and I also think on release there should be a torrent download also, with a few devs seeding. - InvertedShadow
- What you say is true Scott, the source engine is moderately fast, I just don't understand why people cannot make convience installers - for that matter, I don't care that much anyway. I do hope that for alpha 2 there is a torrent, and I do hope that it will not install over 1.1 - so I can go back to it for comparison/if i don't like alpha 2. --Weclock 19:38, 29 August 2006 (PDT)--Weclock 19:38, 29 August 2006 (PDT)

HL2-less installations
This was really handy for me in a previous version, as I don't keep HL2 installed. I copied the previous version and modified it be a more concise and not say "alpha beta" in it. Masque 01:02, 29 December 2006 (PST)

Should instructions be included on how to check your installer?
